Anchor: About Us

Making Anchor

In 2018, Roseanne was commissioned by the dlr LexIcon Library, to write a radio play, Anchor, which was part of the programme of events marking the Centenary of the sinking of the RMS Leinster. The play is narrated, in verse, from the point of view of the ship’s Anchor, from her birth through to the present day.

Richard sound designed and edited the piece. He chose to record most of the sound elements in and around Dun Laoghaire, providing an authentic aural base to...'anchor'...the remainder of the design.

As part of the development of the piece, we invited the Dun Laoghaire community to take part, by sharing their ideas of what this Anchor may have heard during her time standing as a memorial in Dun Laoghaire. There were three ways people could participate: online, using #dlrAnchor, or by emailing; in person, by coming to a brainstorming workshop at the LexIcon; and on paper, by writing down a message and leaving it in a box beside a model of the Anchor made by LexIcon librarian Seán Downes. Many of the ideas generated in this way, found their way into the finished piece, during the moments when Anchor pauses her narration, and we hear Dun Laoghaire life going on around her. The finished recorded piece was presented for an audience in the Studio theatre at dlr LexIcon on Saturday 6th October 2018, as part of the Library’s Family Day.
